Excessive sweating

Overview

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by abnormally increased perspiration which is in excess of that required to regulate the body’s temperature. The cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown in most cases.

Symptoms and signs

While any part of the body may be affected, hands, feet, armpits, and the back are among the most common regions of increased perspiration due to the relatively high concentration of sweat glands.

Treatment

Hyperhidrosis can be effectively managed. Treatment can include alternative antiperspirants, iontophoresis, botulinum toxins such as Botox® (which can last 9-12 months) and systemic medication.
