Overview

Lichen planus affects the skin and the oral mucosa, and presents itself in the form of papules, lesions or a rash. The cause of lichen planus is not known however it is not contagious.

Symptoms and signs

Lichen planus is characterised by purple to skin coloured papules commonly affecting the wrist or ankle which are usually, but not always, itchy. In the mouth it may appear as ulcers or a white lacey net, and in the genital area may appear as an irritation or erosion which can be painful.

Treatment

Treatment includes topical therapy and systemic therapy (tablets) and is determined by the extent and severity of the condition.
The cause of lichen planus is not known.
