What is Trichology?
Trichology is the science of the function, diagnosis and treatment of healthy hair growth. Consultant Dermatologists who specialise in hair-loss and scalp conditions provide expertise in diagnosing the underlying conditions causing hair-loss. As well as treating the medical conditions, there are a range of services that can improve the appearance of your hair, or help promote healthy hair growth that fall under the umbrella of Trichology.

What is involved in Trichology?
During a consultation with a Consultant Dermatologist specialising in hair-loss and scalp conditions you will have a detailed assessment and scalp examination to help identify the causes of your hair loss. They will explain how healthy hair functions, what causes hair loss, and answer any questions or concerns you may have. A baseline set of clinical photographs will be taken using the Canfield stereotactic system, the global standard for clinical hair photography in order to monitor and measure your hair growth.
The Consultant Dermatologist will discuss all the possible treatment options with you and the results you should expect. All treatment options are backed by clinical evidence. We do not offer fad or so called ‘miracle treatments’.
We also offer scalp treatments including scalp descaling, and treatments to calm sensitive and inflamed scalps.
What aftercare is required for Trichology?
What is the cost of Trichology?
A new hair-loss or scalp consultation with a specialist Consultant Dermatologist is £360 and lasts for around 30minutes. A review consultation is £225. We also offer review appointments for patients of the clinic who have been diagnosed with male androgenetic alopecia with one of our Dermatology Assistants at a charge of £80.
Is there any preparation needed before having Trichology?
We recommend that you do not wash your hair for at least 48 hours before your consultation.
It is better to leave your hair loose and not braided or styled, and without hair care products (such as fibres or styling products) in place.
You should bring along details to your appointment of what hair care products you use, what supplements or medication you are on and if you have had blood tests or pathology results in the last 2 years, that is also helpful to bring to your appointment. We have a detailed medical questionnaire we will ask you to complete before your appointment.
